The Avengers are going on a bit of a vacation, and instead of taking a jet, Tony thought it would be a great idea and team bonding moment to drive there instead.
The Avengers descend upon what intelligence has identified as one of HYDRA’s most heavily fortified research facilities, expecting to dismantle another weapons program or experimental super-soldier project. Deep beneath the compound, they discover a reinforced vault sealed behind layers of blast doors, biohazard warnings, radiation symbols, and orders marked DO NOT ENTER. Every precaution suggests that whatever lies inside is too dangerous to be allowed near the outside world. Weapons raised, they breach the chamber—only to find a little girl, no older than six or seven, sitting quietly on the floor with a worn stuffed rabbit in her lap. She looks up with wide, frightened eyes, as though she’s been waiting for someone to come. There are no restraints, no guards, no monstrous experiment… just a child. But the readings flooding Tony’s scanners make no sense. The room wasn’t built to keep people out—it was built to keep her in. The terrifying question isn’t what HYDRA did to her. It’s what this innocent little girl is capable of that made an organization like HYDRA fear her enough to lock her away behind every warning label imaginable.
During an Avengers mission gone catastrophically wrong, Bucky Barnes dies. Not metaphorically, not for a few seconds before someone manages to restart his heart, but truly dies, his body left behind while his soul awakens somewhere between the living world and whatever waits beyond it. That is where he meets Y/N, Death herself. She is nothing like the skeletal horror mortals have imagined for centuries. She appears as a small, hauntingly beautiful young woman with long dark curls, deep brown eyes, pale skin, and an almost gothic elegance, usually draped in black and silver as though shadows naturally gather around her. She is ancient beyond comprehension, neither cruel nor malicious, simply inevitable. Every living thing eventually meets her, and she has spent eternity guiding souls from one existence into the next without attachment. Bucky is supposed to be no different. His name has already been written, his life has ended, and Y/N has come to take him with her. Except Bucky refuses to go quietly. After spending so much of his life having his choices stolen from him, he cannot accept that just when he has finally begun building a life of his own, it is already over. Something about his desperation affects Y/N in a way no mortal ever has. She has witnessed billions plead for another chance, yet Bucky is the first person who makes Death wish she could give one. Against every law governing life and death, she returns his soul to his body.
Y/n and Bucky loved each other. But sometimes, Bucky would get in his head. He’d convince himself that he wasn’t good for her. That he was too broken. And he didn’t want to break her too.
Y/n sits in the compound kitchen playing with her bowl of cereal the morning after a rough mission. She had healed many of her teammates throughout it, but the hardest part was healing Steve Rogers. Not because she wasn’t capable, but because every time she was close to him, her stomach flutters and her breath hitches and she feels like she might overheat. She’s had a crush on him ever since she joined the team. She’s was always sarcastic and snarky with everyone, but the moment he would walk in the room, her remarks would hesitate and she would stumble over her words slightly. She loved the way he could command a room, the way his shirts pulled tightly over his chest, the sound of his voice, the way he could pick up a punching bag with one arm like it weighed nothing, the way he’d reach over her to help her pull a mug off the shelf she couldn’t reach, how he looked in a sweater this time of year (Christmas holiday), the way he would compliment her during training not knowing it made her heart skip a beat. Her breath seemed to quicken every time she had to have a conversation with him and it killed her. y/n was always fierce and independent, dangerous, didn’t hesitate on the job, always dominant and in control. But God, she would let him control her. She couldn’t admit out loud even to Nat, her best friend, how much she’d think about what she would let him to her. Fantasizing about him in meetings, her thighs pressing together ever so slightly just to feel some type of relief from the ache he gave her. Daydreaming about him pushing her onto the table after everyone has left and taking her tight there. She would shake her head to get rid of the thoughts. She had no idea that he felt the same way, and he didn’t miss a thing. He watched, he knew. And if he could drag it on, feigning obliviousness when he would do the things he knew drove her crazy, he would. The team was on break for the holidays. No missions or threats, just the Avengers in the compound now decorated with tinsel and a comically large Christmas tree, sometimes having movie nights with hot chocolate, secret santa gift exchanges, and quiet mornings watching the snow fall over the compound. Y/n had no idea her holiday was about to get much more interesting.
Steve Rogers. You’re the new avenger with healing powers, he’s sworn off relationships since he lost Peggy…but you look so familiar. He’s conflicted. Slow burn.
When Bucky Barnes’ quinjet crash lands on an abandoned Island, he wasn’t sure how long it would take for SHIELD or the other Avengers to find him, but he certainly wasn’t expecting to have company.
