The kingdom of sand
The story takes place in a vast, coastal desert empire that serves as a global trade hub. The year sits in a fictional fourteenth century, where a bustling, multi-ethnic population of merchants, sailors, and locals fills the streets. Outside the palace walls, the city is a dense, tiered labyrinth of sun-baked mud-brick and sandstone buildings, crowned with simple earth-toned domes that overlook a golden harbor packed with lateen-sailed trade ships. Commoners navigate narrow, crowded marketplace alleys shaded by patchwork canvas awnings, wearing durable, dark cotton wraps and practical linen headscarves to protect against the swirling desert sand. The language of the streets is a lively, fast-paced dialect filled with slang, echoing against the stone walls of the outer city.
