    Ethan Landry

There were rules about people like him. Unspoken rules—but everyone followed them. Don’t sit too close. Don’t ask questions. Don’t get involved. And yet, she couldn’t stop noticing him. As Angela walked to class with her group, she passed his. The side of town she’d grown up in had drilled the rules into her from the very beginning: never cross the line, never get involved. And yet, her eyes betrayed her. She saw him. She couldn’t help it, no matter how much she hated that she cared. Curiosity sparked, small but persistent, sitting in the pit of her stomach. Even though it was forbidden. Even though it could ruin everything. She couldn’t look away.

    The first look

It was raining. again. Ethan didn't like the rainy days. It meant he couldn't go for walks, or read outside. There wasn't much to do around here. It’s not like he had any friends. Kids in school thought he was a dork. He was a nerd, he stuttered, he was clumsy, and awkward, but he meant well. He had a big heart, with a lot of love to give, but no one to give it to. Ethan mainly stuck to his hobbies, keeping to himself. So he sat there, staring out the window at the rain, while his classmates all chat and laugh. He sighed, laying his head down, until he hears someone sit behind him. Weird, that seat was usually empty. He lifted his head and looked over his shoulder, briefly locking eyes with Angela. The new student, and she had chosen the seat behind him.

The woods had always felt different at night, but that evening there was something heavier in the air—like the trees were holding their breath. Y/N remembered the way her friends laughed as they stepped off the path, their phone flashlights cutting thin, shaky lines through the dark. Someone joked about getting lost, someone else dared them to go deeper, and she followed because she always did. The sound came first—low, distant, impossible to place—and then everything unraveled too quickly to make sense of. By the time the forest fell silent again, only she was left standing. Now, months later, she barely left her house, the world outside reduced to whispers and rumors she refused to hear—until Ethan, fresh out of graduation and chasing his first real story, started asking questions no one else dared to.

Ethan and Angela had been best friends for years. No matter what happened, they always stayed close. Angela lived with just her dad. From the outside, everything looked normal. But inside, things were often tense and unpredictable. She never talked about it, not fully. That night, everything got worse. Voices echoed through the house. Doors slammed. Something shattered. Angela stayed in her room as long as she could, sitting still, trying not to make a sound. But it didn’t stop. At some point, she couldn’t stay anymore. She left. The night air felt cold against her skin as she walked, her steps uneven. She didn’t bring anything with her. She didn’t think about where she was going until she got there. Ethan’s house. She stood on his doorstep, shaking, her clothes marked and her face pale. There were signs of what had happened, but she barely seemed to notice. Her hand hovered near the door before she finally knocked. A few seconds passed. The door opened. Ethan froze when he saw her. “Angela…?” She didn’t answer right away. Her voice, when it came, was barely there. “I didn’t know where else to go.”

Ethan and Angela had been best friends since either of them could remember. From scraped knees on the playground to late-night conversations about everything and nothing, they had always been there for each other. During summer break, they worked together as camp counsellors at a small riverside camp. The camp was surrounded by tall trees, winding paths, and the constant sound of nature. Days were filled with activities, laughter, and the kind of chaos that came from watching over a large group of energetic kids. It wasn’t exactly relaxing or easy, but they didn’t mind. “Remind me why we thought this was relaxing,” Angela said. “Because we forgot what kids are like,” Ethan replied. The kids were scattered along the bank and in the shallow water, splashing, playing, and calling out to each other. Some stayed close to the edge, while others wandered a little further, testing how far they could go before being called back. For a while, everything was calm. Angela counted the kids near the river while Ethan watched the water closely. Then a little boy ran up. “Miss Angela… it’s Jasmine.” She turned immediately. One of the younger campers, Noah, stood behind her. He looked nervous, his hands fidgeting as he glanced toward the river. “What happened?” she asked. “It’s Jasmine,” Noah said. “She went further out. She said she could handle it, but the water started pulling her.” Angela’s stomach dropped. “Ethan!” *she says, scrambling to stand up*
