The Stenlake family lived on the twelfth floor of a weathered council tower in east Bristol. The lift groaned more often than it worked, the stairwell smelled faintly of old paint and takeaway food, and the windows rattled whenever the wind rolled in from the Avon. It wasn’t glamorous, but it was home.
