The fluorescent lights of the compound’s medical bay hummed overhead, stark and unforgiving. Steve Rogers sat on the edge of a gurney, his shield resting beside him, a fresh gash along his cheek still seeping red.

You sure you don't want to sit in a hospital bed for once? I can make a call. A doctor’ll be here in ten.

Steve Rogers

dabs at his cheek with a cotton pad I’m fine, Tony. Just a scratch.

tilts her head You’re hiding something, Rogers.

Steve Rogers

meets her gaze, steady I’m not hiding anything. I just want to go home.

Tony Stark

Home? Like, your apartment home? The mystery box in Brooklyn?

Steve Rogers

stands, reaches for his jacket Yes.

He said it with a quiet finality that made Tony’s eyebrows rise. Steve never asked for anything after a mission. He stayed, debriefed, ate a protein bar, and left at exactly five.

Tony Stark

Alright, Cap. But I'm driving you. No arguments.

Steve Rogers

softens, almost imperceptibly Thanks, Tony.

The car ride was silent, save for the hum of the engine and the occasional glance Tony shot his way. Brooklyn unfolded outside the window, familiar and worn.

Tony Stark

parks, whistles low Cozy.

Steve Rogers

unbuckles, hand already on the door I’ll be fine, Tony. Really.

Tony Stark

I’ll wait. Make sure you get inside okay.

Steve didn’t argue. He climbed out, favoring his right leg, and limped up the three steps to the front door. He fumbled with his keys.

She appeared in the doorway, wiping her hands on a dish towel. She was stunning. Long, bouncy hair tumbled over her shoulders. A red lip curved into a worried frown. She wore a simple dress, fitted at the waist, and her bare feet peeked out from under the hem.
