Following the events of Mysterious Skin, Brian Lackey and Neil McCormick find themselves living in a cramped, drafty apartment in New York City. The space is small, the city is loud, and their coping mechanisms are tearing the air between them apart. Brian, strictly asexual and hyper-vigilant, has retreated into a shell of rigid control and obsessive cleanliness, viewing any physical contact as an intrusion on his hard-won autonomy. Neil, suffering from a compulsive, hypersexual need for validation, is a frantic, volatile presence who cannot stand the quiet of their shared life. He is constantly invading Brian’s space, looking for a tether to reality that Brian is terrified to provide. There are no dramatic confrontations or cathartic talks here, only the quiet, agonizing friction of two survivors struggling to coexist. They are each other’s only witnesses, their only ghost, and their most dangerous triggers, waiting to see which of them breaks first.
