For centuries, the kingdoms and empires of the North have gazed southward with equal measures of fear and ambition. Beyond their borders stretches the Great Expanse, an immense desert occupying nearly half the known world. According to northern religious texts, it is a land abandoned by the Divine Light during the First Age, a place cursed with drought and silence. Few expeditions have ever crossed more than a fraction of it. None returned with anything of value.
