Night Fury
Years after the events of Avatar: Fire and Ash and the growing resistance movements spreading across Pandora, peace still remained fragile. Though many clans had united against the RDA in recent years, large regions of Pandora remained completely untouched by outside contact — territories so dangerous and isolated that even experienced Na’vi avoided speaking of them. Among those forgotten lands were the western deserts.

Threat on the Horizon
One year has passed since the events of Fire and Ash and the more recent events of From the Ashes, and the Western Frontier has finally begun to heal. The RDA’s presence has largely vanished, their facilities abandoned and their machines slowly being reclaimed by Pandora, while the Mawnkwang have been defeated and scattered. During From the Ashes, the Sarentu were separated and So’lek was forced to search for them and bring them back together, but one enemy survived: Major Brudaski, an RDA officer who had worked alongside the Mawnkwang to eliminate the Sarentu. The plan failed, and the Sarentu survived, but Brudaski refuses to accept defeat. He secretly remains in the Western Frontier, maintaining contact with surviving RDA forces and Mawnkwang loyalists, and his new obsession is Za’ri te Sarentu Kataru’ite, the young Sarentu warrior known throughout the Western Frontier as the “Night Fury.” Za’ri has become legendary after years of fighting the RDA and protecting her people, but to the clans she is more than a terrifying warrior or symbol of revenge. The Sarentu have a long history with the Aranahe, Zeswa, and Kame’tire, having once traveled between clans as storytellers, diplomats, and messengers who carried knowledge and strengthened connections between different peoples. Because of this history, Za’ri and the surviving Sarentu are deeply respected and welcomed by these clans. The clans see Za’ri as family and as one of their own, even while younger Na’vi admire the frightening legend surrounding the Night Fury. Her reputation represents revenge against those who harmed Pandora and protection for those who cannot protect themselves, but beneath the legend she is still Za’ri, a Sarentu who has survived unimaginable loss. As the seasons change, the Zeswa begin another great migration as their Zakru travel toward new grazing grounds, and the clans gather once again for the Great Games. This is Za’ri and her Sarentu family’s second time participating in the Games, following their involvement in The Sky Breaker. The Games are a major celebration of survival, prosperity, friendship, and the bonds between the Western Frontier clans, drawing hunters, warriors, storytellers, traders, and competitors from across Pandora. The only major difference this year is the arrival of visitors from the eastern reef clans. The Metkayina have traveled a great distance to attend, including Tsireya, Roxto, and Anoung, son of Tonowari and Ronal. The Sully family travels with them, bringing Jake, Neytiri, Kiri, Lo’ak, Tuk, and Neteyam to the Western Frontier. For the Sullys, returning to the forest is bittersweet, as the familiar trees and creatures remind them of the home they once knew before fleeing the RDA and eventually finding refuge with the Metkayina. The Metkayina, however, are overwhelmed by the forest. They are accustomed to endless ocean, coral reefs, open horizons, and life beneath the water. They have no ikran because reef Na’vi have different adaptations and instead rely on sea creatures for transportation and hunting. Because the Great Games are traditionally designed around the abilities and traditions of forest Na’vi, the Metkayina cannot technically compete in many of the events. They instead participate as honored guests and observers while their aquatic abilities and traditions are respected as different rather than inferior. Their arrival creates plenty of curiosity and friendly cultural tension between the reef and forest clans. Tsireya adapts easily and is fascinated by the forest, while Anoung tries to act as though the forest does not bother him, despite clearly being uncomfortable. The forest clans are equally fascinated by the Metkayina’s broad arms, powerful tails, aquatic features, and unfamiliar customs. Amid the celebration, Anoung sees Za’ri for the first time and is immediately captivated. At almost the same moment, Neteyam notices her and is equally drawn to her. Neither boy knows Za’ri well, but both instantly become interested in her, creating an immediate and increasingly ridiculous rivalry. Neteyam and Anoung begin bickering like two boys who have known each other for years despite barely knowing Za’ri at all. Each insists that Za’ri is more interested in him, competes to impress her, and becomes jealous whenever the other speaks to her. Neteyam, usually responsible and composed, becomes unexpectedly competitive whenever Anoung is around, while Anoung refuses to let the forest warrior have the advantage. Their rivalry quickly becomes obvious to everyone around them. Lo’ak finds it hilarious and deliberately encourages them, Roxto sides with Anoung and mocks Neteyam, Tsireya becomes increasingly embarrassed by Anoung’s behavior, and Tuk bluntly suggests that Za’ri could simply choose both of them. Za’ri initially has no idea why these two boys keep acting strangely around her, but eventually realizes that they are competing for her attention. She finds the whole thing irritating, amusing, and occasionally flattering, although she refuses to admit that she is beginning to develop feelings for both of them. Neteyam and Anoung are attracted to different sides of Za’ri. Neteyam recognizes the warrior beneath her reputation and understands the burden of protecting others, being expected to remain strong, and carrying responsibilities far beyond his age. As the eldest Sully son, he understands the pressure Za’ri carries without requiring her to explain it. He sees the exhaustion beneath the Night Fury legend and gives her a sense of familiarity, understanding, and belonging. Anoung is fascinated by Za’ri’s independence, strength, sarcasm, stubbornness, and mystery. Unlike many forest Na’vi, he did not grow up hearing stories about her or watching her become a legend, so he is interested in the person behind the reputation. He notices the girl beneath the warrior and makes Za’ri feel seen rather than worshipped or feared. Za’ri finds herself genuinely drawn to both of them, even though she initially insists that she has no interest in either. Neteyam brings out the part of her that wants to be understood by someone who shares her burdens, while Anoung brings out the part of her that wants to experience something new and simply be herself. Their romantic rivalry begins as comedy but gradually becomes more serious as their feelings deepen. At the same time, strange things begin happening around the Great Games. Hunters report unfamiliar tracks in territories controlled by different clans. Travelers disappear between camps. Supplies go missing. Sacred sites are disturbed. Competitors are injured under suspicious circumstances, and evidence seems to point toward different clans being responsible for one another’s misfortunes. Tensions slowly rise between groups that have spent generations building trust. Za’ri notices patterns that others overlook because she has spent years learning how enemies operate. The incidents are not random. Someone is deliberately creating suspicion and attempting to turn the clans against one another. The truth is that Major Brudaski has secretly returned. He has gathered surviving RDA personnel and Mawnkwang loyalists and is using the Great Games as the perfect opportunity to strike. The Games have brought almost every major Western Frontier clan together in one place, including the Sarentu and everyone Za’ri cares about. Brudaski knows he cannot simply attack Za’ri openly because the clans would unite against him. Instead, he plans to isolate her, manipulate the clans, and destroy the alliances surrounding the Sarentu before finally killing her. The Mawnkwang provide knowledge of the land, clan territories, tracking, and Na’vi behavior, while the RDA provides weapons, technology, intelligence, and military strategy. Neteyam and Anoung especially catch his attention because both boys are quickly becoming emotionally attached to her. Brudaski intends to use those relationships against her. His obsession with Za’ri is personal. He sees the Night Fury as the greatest surviving symbol of Sarentu resistance and as proof of every failure the RDA and Mawnkwang have suffered. Mercer failed to break the Sarentu. The Mawnkwang failed to eliminate them. Brudaski himself failed to finish the job during From the Ashes. Now he wants to succeed where everyone else failed. His ultimate objective is simple: kill Za’ri. He believes that if the Night Fury dies, the Sarentu will lose their strongest symbol and the Western Frontier clans will become vulnerable to division. Brudaski deliberately uses the Games to create Za’ri eventually discovers evidence that an RDA presence is still active and realizes that the Mawnkwang are involved. Then she finds something unmistakable that reveals the truth: Major Brudaski survived. He has been watching her and has returned specifically for her. For the first time since the war ended, Za’ri realizes that peace may have been an illusion. The Great Games were supposed to celebrate the end of an era of war and the unity of Pandora’s people, but Brudaski intends to turn that unity against itself. As the danger grows, Neteyam and Anoung are forced to put their childish rivalry aside and fight together to protect Za’ri, the Sarentu, and the clans. Their rivalry does not disappear, however; even while fighting side by side, they continue competing and bickering over Za’ri whenever they get the chance. What begins as a funny love triangle slowly becomes an emotional bond between three young Na’vi who understand different parts of one another, while the threat surrounding them becomes increasingly deadly. At the same time, she must confront something far more personal: despite everything she has survived and every wall she has built around herself, she is beginning to fall for both Neteyam and Anoung, and eventually she will have to decide who she can trust with the part of herself she has protected most fiercely—her heart.
