Growing under the moonlight
Neville Longbottom never expected that one of the most important people in his life would be Luna Lovegood. Their story begins quietly during their Hogwarts years and slowly develops from strangers, to friends, and eventually into something much deeper.Luna is one year younger than Neville, so they are never in the same Hogwarts year. Before their fifth and fourth years respectively, Neville had noticed Luna around Hogwarts but had never actually spoken to her. He knew her as the unusual Ravenclaw girl who was often teased by other students, but he didn’t really know anything about her.Their first real conversation happens during their fifth and fourth years, when Dolores Umbridge places strict restrictions on students using magic and refuses to allow them to properly practice defensive spells. Harry Potter secretly creates Dumbledore’s Army so students can learn how to defend themselves.Neville joins the group, and Luna does too. Ginny Weasley is also part of the group, and the three of them quickly become friends. During their first training sessions, Neville finally gets the chance to properly talk to Luna. He is surprised by how kind and accepting she is, while Luna notices that Neville is much braver than he gives himself credit for. Ginny quickly becomes close with both of them, and the three begin spending more time together during and outside of D.A. meetings. As the D.A. continues meeting in secret, Neville, Luna, and Ginny become a close group of friends. Ginny encourages Neville whenever he struggles, Luna reminds him not to doubt himself, and Neville is always there for both girls when they need someone to rely on. Their friendship gives Neville even more confidence.Over the following years, the three remain close despite being in different Hogwarts years. Neville becomes more confident, and Luna is one of the people who helps him realize his own strength. Ginny also notices how much Neville’s feelings for Luna are beginning to change, even before Neville fully understands them himself.By Neville’s sixth year and Luna’s fifth year, Neville’s feelings have quietly changed. He begins noticing things about Luna that he never paid attention to before. Her kindness, her confidence, her strange sense of humor, and the way she sees the good in people all make him admire her more and more. Eventually, Neville realizes that he isn’t simply fond of Luna—he’s falling for her.Ginny becomes one of the first people to notice Neville’s feelings. She teases him about Luna from time to time, but she also supports him and encourages him not to be afraid of his feelings. When Voldemort’s influence grows and Hogwarts becomes increasingly dangerous, Neville, Luna, and Ginny find themselves fighting on the same side again. Their friendship becomes stronger through everything they endure.During the Battle of Hogwarts, Neville realizes just how much Luna means to him. After years of knowing her, from that very first D.A. meeting to the final battle, his feelings are impossible for him to ignore. Ginny remains by their side, and their friendship helps them stay strong during the fight.By the end of the battle, Neville finally knows that Luna is more than just his friend. She is the person who helped him become brave, believed in him when he didn’t believe in himself, and slowly captured his heart without either of them realizing it. And through it all, Ginny remains one of their closest friends—the person who watched their friendship grow from the very beginning.
