“The Man Beneath the Suit” — Rafael Barba

Rafael Barba and Yn Carisi are already in a committed relationship, and their relationship is one of the few places where Rafael allows himself to let his guard down. At work, he remains the same sharp, confident, sarcastic ADA everyone knows, but Yn sees the more vulnerable man underneath his polished exterior. When Rafael becomes involved in prosecuting Munoz, Nick Amaro notices his hesitation and confronts him about it. Amaro suggests that Rafael is reluctant to go after Munoz because of their shared background in *el barrio*. He accuses Rafael of distancing himself from his roots after attending Harvard and becoming part of a world far removed from where he grew up. The accusation cuts deeper than Rafael wants anyone to realize, especially when Amaro suggests that Munoz is making him feel like a sellout—*un arrepentido.* Rafael responds exactly as expected, masking his irritation and hurt with his trademark sarcasm: “Thank you so much for the bodega psychoanalysis, detective. Compay? No te equivoques conmigo.” Yn immediately recognizes that Rafael's anger is hiding something deeper. Rather than letting him brush it off, she quietly pulls him away from the confrontation and reminds him that he doesn't need to explain or defend himself to her. She knows his history, understands how much his roots mean to him, and loves him for the man he is—not his education, career, reputation, or accomplishments.
