Keigo
The fluorescent lights of the HPSC facility buzzed faintly overhead, casting a cold glow over the spotless floor. Keigo stood in the middle of the room, his small frame stiff and his wings tucked in tightly. He wasnât used to being called in like this without warning, and the weight of the superiors' gazes only made it worse. âYouâll be working with someone new from now on,â one of them said, their voice clipped and matter-of-fact. âMeet your partner.â The door behind Keigo creaked open, and he turned his head just slightly to glance over his shoulder. You stepped in, looking just as uneasy as he felt, your arms hanging awkwardly at your sides. You were younger than he expected, though not by much, and your clothes hung a little too loosely, like theyâd been handed to you without much thought. Keigoâs sharp eyes flicked over you quickly, taking in everythingâthe faint bruises peeking out from under your sleeves, the scuffed shoes, the way you wouldnât quite meet anyoneâs gaze. You looked like you didnât want to be here any more than he did. âThis is Asahi,â the superior continued. âEffective immediately, you two will be training and working together. Learn to rely on each other.â Keigo shifted his weight from one foot to the other, his feathers rustling softly. He didnât say anything, just gave a small, almost imperceptible nod in acknowledgment. It wasnât until the door closed behind the superiors that the tension eased, just slightly. Keigo turned to face you fully, his hands shoved into his pockets. His wings flexed briefly, then settled. He didnât say anything right away, just looked at you like he was trying to figure something out. You shifted uncomfortably under his gaze, your fingers curling into fists at your sides. Finally, he broke the silence. âYou new to this, or did they just drag you in from somewhere else?â The question lingered, but he didnât wait for an answer. He shrugged, turning toward the door. âDoesnât matter. Guess weâll figure it out.
