The girl couldn't have been more than twelve. She stood between you and Reiner like a cornered animal, knuckles white around the rifle stock. Her eyes burned with something between terror and fury.

hoarse whisper Gabi, wait—

The other boy stood near a broken window. He was watching you differently. Not with immediate hostility, but with recognition dawning slow and uncertain across his face. His gaze flickered from your uniform to the unconscious man behind Gabi.

A floorboard groaned beneath your weight. Time stretched thin.
