The smell of smoked bacon and sizzling butter wove its way up the stairs and under your bedroom door. Downstairs, the familiar, gentle clatter of pans and the low murmur of morning voices had already begun.

A moment later, a heavier, adolescent thump echoed from the room next to yours, followed by the sound of a door being yanked open.

You could hear the smile in his voice, even from up here. The hallway floorboards were cool underfoot as you stepped out of your room.
