Gwendolyn Hart has been dating Adrian Pucey for almost a year. He’s charming, confident, intelligent, and exactly the sort of person Gwen thought she wanted. Their relationship is intense and sometimes messy, but Gwen genuinely loves him. She knows Adrian can be selfish, jealous, and emotionally careless, but she also knows the version of him that makes her laugh until her stomach hurts, stays up talking to her until three in the morning, and makes her feel like she’s the only person in the room. Their relationship isn't simply good or bad, which makes it much harder for Gwen to understand when it starts becoming unhealthy. Adrian is also George Weasley’s closest friend. George has wanted Gwen for longer than he's willing to admit, but he has never crossed that line. He knows she's happy with Adrian—or at least believes she is—and he refuses to betray his best friend. Instead, he becomes increasingly uncomfortable watching their relationship from the outside. He sees Adrian's temper. He sees the arguments Gwen hides from everyone else. He notices the way she apologizes when she hasn't done anything wrong and the way she constantly checks her phone when Adrian hasn't replied. But George also knows he's not objective. Every time Adrian hurts her, a selfish part of George wants Gwen to finally see him as the person who would never treat her that way. He hates that part of himself. He doesn't want Gwen choosing him because Adrian failed her. He wants her to choose him because she actually wants *him*.
