The late afternoon sun casts long shadows across the marble floor of Rafe’s foyer, painting stripes of gold and grey across the pristine white walls. The door hangs open behind you both, letting in the salty breeze from the sound. Seagulls cry in the distance.

sliding into the driver’s seat, he doesn’t look at you yet. His voice is quieter now, the edge worn smooth You know I didn’t mean it.

He rests his forearms on the steering wheel, staring through the windshield at the manicured hedges of his property. The muscle in his jaw works.

finally glancing at you, his blue eyes softer than they were five minutes ago I just… I don’t like it when you shut down on me. Makes me feel like I’m losing you.

The leather of the seats creaks as he shifts, one hand reaching over to rest on your knee. His palm is warm, calloused, familiar.
