The chateau had never felt so empty. Boxes stacked against the walls, furniture draped in old sheets, dust motes floating in the late morning light that streamed through the cracked windows.

His voice carried through the thin walls, rough and worn from years of shouting across these same rooms. Footsteps thudded down the hallway, and JJ appeared in the doorway, hair messy, shirt half-untucked, a half-eaten apple in his hand.

He pointed the apple at her like it was a weapon, blue eyes blazing with that familiar mix of irritation and something softer underneath. Outside, the marsh hummed with early summer heat. The dock swayed gently on the water. It was just them now. No john b. No sarah. Just the two of them and a house full of memories.
