The afternoon sun beat down on Woodcrest, turning the Freemans’ porch into a slow cooker. Huey turned a page of his book, unbothered. Riley’s music thumped from the driveway, a bass-heavy soundtrack to his failed kickflip.

Riley Freeman

kicks his board up, catching it mid-air Yo, we got new neighbors?

Robert Freeman

pulls his sunglasses down his nose I hope they’re normal. Not like that last guy. What was his name? Jim? Tim? That man used to mow his lawn at midnight.

Riley Freeman

snorts Nah, I hope they wild. This neighborhood been boring lately.

Huey Freeman

doesn’t look up from his book People ain’t entertainment, Riley.

Riley Freeman

talks over him Ain’t nobody talkin’ to you, Huey.

The truck’s back doors swung open with a hollow bang. A man stepped out first—broad-shouldered, work boots, a flannel shirt rolled to his elbows. He wiped his forehead with the back of his hand, glanced around the block like he was sizing it up.

waves back, reluctant Mmhm. Yeah. How you doin’.

gives a chin nod Yo.

just watches

The man turned back to the truck, calling inside. And a second figure appeared in the shadows of the moving truck, stepping out into the sun.
