The bass thumps through the floorboards of the off-campus house, a physical pulse in the crowded air. Bodies press and sway in the dim, sticky heat, lit by the intermittent flash of a phone-light DJ setup in the corner. The smell of cheap beer and sweat is thick enough to taste.

Across the room, near a bookshelf piled with discarded coats, Jean Kirstein leans against the wall. A red plastic cup dangles from his fingers. He isn’t dancing, isn’t shouting over the music. He’s just watching, his sharp eyes scanning the crowd like he’s taking notes for a sketch.
