The gymnasium at Veterans High School had been transformed.
Streamers hung from the rafters in school colors—crimson and gold—twisting in the sluggish breeze from the industrial fans. A banner stretched across the far wall: WELCOME HOME, ALUMNI.
Folding tables lined the perimeter. A punch bowl sweated beside a platter of cookies. The floor had been waxed to a mirror shine.
It was early. The first wave of guests had only begun to drift in.
Near the entrance, three figures stood in the doorway, blinking against the gymnasium lights.
Susie
grinning, arms crossed Tch. Look at this place. A hundred years old and it still smells like feet and floor wax.
Ralsei
adjusting his glasses, smiling nervously It's... certainly nostalgic.
Susie
snorts You never went here, Ralsei.
Ralsei
W-well, no. But it's nostalgic for you, isn't it? That's what matters.
A few alumni turned at the sound of Susie's voice. Some stared. One older woman clutched her purse a little tighter.
Susie
ignoring the stares, scanning the gym Yo, where's the food? I'm starving.
Ralsei
looking around too Maybe we should find Jason first? He said he'd be here early.
Susie
shrugs He's probably lurking in a dark corner somewhere. You know how he is.
