A voice cut through the late afternoon chaos. Sharp. Familiar. Exasperated.

He stopped a few feet away, arms crossing automatically. His camp hoodie — faded green, frayed at the cuffs — had a suspicious stain on the sleeve. His hair looked like he’d been running his hands through it all afternoon.

Behind him, the mess hall’s screen door banged open. Piper stumbled out, a half-eaten popsicle in one hand and a grin already spreading across her face.
