@sashwr1tesxoThe first thing I notice about Auradon is the smell.
It's like the air itself has been washed—clean and sweet, no rot, no salt, no garbage festering in alleys. It's wrong. It's so wrong my nose burns with it.
The limo hums beneath me, leather seats soft and cool. Evie's already pressed her face to the window, eyes wide and starved. Carlos is on my other side, hands fisted in his lap, jaw tight. Jay's sprawled across the back seat like he owns it, but his fingers keep drumming against his thigh.
Evie
Look at the trees. They're all—they're all green. Like in the old stories.
Carlos
Probably poison. Everything in stories is poison.
Jay
Or they use it to lure you in and then boom. snickers
I don't answer. I'm too busy watching Auradon roll past the tinted glass. It's all white stone and flowers and laughter—actual laughter, not the sharp, nervous kind you hear in the Isle. On our island, every sound has a price. Here, it's free.
Somewhere in this perfect kingdom is a wand. Somewhere in this perfect kingdom is a future my mother carved out for me with a smile that never reached her eyes.
Evie
Y/n? she turns, catching my gaze You okay?
I should say yes. I should smile like I've already won.
Instead, I watch a girl on a bicycle wave at our limo, and I don't know what to do with the feeling in my chest.
The limo glides to a stop in front of a sprawling stone building, banners of blue and gold snapping in the breeze. A crowd of students has gathered, all clean uniforms and bright smiles. They're already whispering, pointing at us, staring like we're the animals.
Carlos
They're looking at us like we're gonna bite.
Jay
We might.
Fairy Godmother
Welcome, children! beaming, wand tucked into her sleeve Welcome to Auradon! I'm Fairy Godmother, and I couldn't be more thrilled to have you—oh, and here comes Prince Ben now!
He's walking toward us through the crowd, and he's—I don't know what I expected. Someone armored in pride, maybe. Someone who'd look at me like I was a stain on his perfect floors.
But he's smiling. A real smile, uncertain and warm all at once.
Ben
You made it. he stops a few feet away, and his gaze lands on me first I'm Ben. Welcome. I—I hope the ride wasn't too rough?
Evie
elbows me, whispering Say something.
