JJ Maybank was supposed to be dead. After Groff’s attack, the Pogues bury JJ in Morocco and return to the Outer Banks, believing they have lost their best friend. But JJ survives, barely, and is found by a young Moroccan woman who lives nearby. She knows nothing about him, his friends, or the life he left behind. All she knows is that he is injured, stubborn, suspicious, and clearly not from Morocco. JJ, meanwhile, doesn’t trust her and refuses to accept her help. But with nowhere else to go, he has no choice but to rely on the stranger who saved him. As she helps him recover, she begins to realize that there is much more to JJ than he is willing to reveal—and that somewhere across the ocean, an entire group of people is grieving for someone who is still alive.
