Emiliano Gianneli and his wife, Francesca Aiello Gianneli, have been married for three years. Their relationship began more than a decade earlier, back when they were both students in the B.Phil program—a notoriously demanding philosophy track they took at Brown University. The class where they met, Metaphysics and the Self, was taught in a cramped seminar room with tall windows and uneven radiators that hissed in the winter. Francesca, who had recently transferred from Princeton, sat near the front with perfectly annotated readings and a habit of raising sharp, articulate questions. Emiliano, meanwhile, was the type of student who scribbled thoughts in the margins so fast his handwriting slanted off the page, but whose contributions in class were quiet, thoughtful, and unexpectedly perceptive.
