Your father stands behind his massive oak desk, not looking up from the papers in his hands. Beside him, leaning against a bookshelf with an easy, relaxed posture, is a man you’ve never seen before. He’s tall, with sun-streaked brown hair that falls into his eyes, and he’s wearing a simple grey t-shirt and jeans that look a bit too casual for this house.

This is Jayson. He’s going to be staying with us for a while.

offers a small, crooked smile Hey.

Your father finally looks up, his expression stern.

Jayson is here for your… benefit. Given your recent… outbursts. He’s a professional. He’ll be your shadow. Where you go, he goes. Starting now.

The man—Jayson—straightens up. His eyes, a warm hazel, lock onto you. He doesn’t look like any bodyguard you’ve ever imagined. He looks like someone who’d be skateboarding in the park.

Jayson’s gaze hasn’t wavered. The initial smile is gone, replaced by an intensity that feels out of place. He’s just… staring. His cheeks look faintly pink.
