The midnight air bit hard against the cold, metal steps of Avengers Tower. The city hummed below, distant and indifferent.

Steve Rogers

The soft thud of his sneakers stopped mid-stride. He stared, brow furrowed, chest heaving from the cold.

The baby on the left — the one with the jet-black hair plastered to its forehead — let out a thin, wailing cry. The other, smaller, squirmed and whimpered, silver-purple eyes blinking up at him, wet and unfocused.

He scooped them up, one in each arm, cradling them close to his chest. His heart hammered.

He pressed the elevator button with his elbow, the bundle in his right arm squirming against the fabric of his jacket. The doors slid shut with a soft chime.
