@marvelfanThe Avengers Compound had never been described as quiet. Between Tony’s lab explosions, Clint’s occasional target practice in the wrong direction, and Thor’s enthusiastic appreciation of Midgardian snacks, silence was about as common as a reasonable villain.
So when Thor walked through the common room doors carrying an overnight bag over one shoulder like he was heading to a weekend resort, everyone noticed.
Not because of the bag.
Because of the smile.
Tony Stark
looking up from his tablet, slowly Alright. Who died? Who’s resurrected? What alien artifact did you find?
Thor
grinning, setting the bag down beside the couch Neither, friend Tony. I merely have excellent news.
Natasha Romanoff
not looking away from her book, but her eyes have definitely shifted You’ve got that look.
Thor
innocently What look?
Clint Barton
from the kitchen, a coffee mug halfway to his lips The look you get when you’ve done something cosmically stupid or found something you’re obsessed with. There’s no in-between with you.
Thor
puffing his chest out proudly Mine beloved shall be arriving shortly.
Silence.
The kind of silence that makes you check if time has stopped.
Steve Rogers
lowering his newspaper slowly …Your what?
Thor
as if he’s just announced the weather My beloved. The woman I intend to marry. She wished to see Midgard, and I told her the Compound was the finest place to begin.
Sam Wilson
emerging from the hallway, frozen mid-step Say the line again, but slower. And with context.
Thor
looking genuinely confused at their reactions I assumed I had mentioned her.
Bruce Banner
setting down a science journal, glasses pushed up Thor. We have weekly team meetings. You’ve never said a word.
Thor
shrugging I speak of her often. You simply do not listen.
Tony stares at him. Clint stares at him. Even Natasha — who pretends she doesn’t care about anything — is now fully invested, book forgotten on her lap.
Tony Stark
slowly, with the energy of a man about to make a bet Okay. What’s she like? Be specific. I have money riding on this already.
Thor
his face softening in a way that makes everyone uncomfortable She is… everything.
A pause.
Clint Barton
flatly That’s not specific.
Thor
She has hair longer than the rivers of Vanaheim. Eyes that hold more warmth than the sun at dawn. A laugh that—
Sam Wilson
holding up a hand Okay, okay. So she’s a poem. Got it. But what’s her deal? Warrior? Witch? Princess?
Thor
pausing, as if considering She is a traveler. A seeker of experiences. She has walked paths most would not dare.
Natasha Romanoff
a tiny smirk And she chose you.
Thor
beaming She did.
The doorbell rings.
Tony’s head snaps up. Clint nearly drops his coffee. Bruce actually drops his journal. Sam lets out a low whistle.
Tony Stark
pointing at Thor She better be real, Point Break. I swear to god, if you’ve hallucinated a girlfriend—
Thor
already walking toward the entrance, impossibly excited I have not hallucinated anything!
The doors slide open.
And there you are.
Sunlight spills around your silhouette like the universe itself is trying to make an entrance. Long hair, windswept from travel. A worn leather jacket over a fitted top. Bag slung over one shoulder like you’ve crossed continents and plan to cross more. Tattoos peeking out from your collar, curling down your arm like living ink.
You look around with the easy confidence of someone who has seen too much to be impressed by a billionaire’s compound.
Thor lights up like a Christmas tree.
Thor
crossing the space in three massive strides Mine love! wrapping you in a hug that lifts you slightly off the ground
Behind him, six Avengers stand in various states of shock.
Tony Stark
muttering Well. I owe Sam fifty bucks.
Sam Wilson
grinning Told you she was real.
Natasha Romanoff
studying you with narrowed, curious eyes Interesting.
