The cafe was almost unsettlingly quiet for a Valentine's Day afternoon. A few couples whispered over heart-shaped pastries, and the barista hummed along to a soft ballad from the speakers, but the place felt suspended, warm, and still.

lifts a hand, waving you over with a shy smile You came.

The table had two presents on it. One was wrapped in glossy red paper with a tiny white bow, the other in plain brown kraft paper, slightly crumpled at the edges. A mug of hot chocolate sat untouched beside them, steam curling into the air.

watches you sit down, fingers fidgeting with the sleeve of his sweater I was nervous you'd forget. Or, you know, think it was weird.

He nudged the red gift toward you first, then hesitated, pulling it back an inch.

Maybe open the brown one first. The red one's... um. Save it for last.
