The roar of the crowd was deafening. Ten thousand voices crashed against the walls of the Akane Sports Arena, a tidal wave of screams, chants, and pounding feet that rattled the very rafters. The air was thick with sweat and adrenaline, sharp and electric. On the polished wooden court below, the lights were blinding.
The scoreboard glowed a furious, unyielding red: 24–24. Match point. Set point. Everything.
On the sidelines, the Akane College bench was a knot of tension. Amaya stood with her hands on her hips, chartreuse eyes fixed on the court, jaw tight. Leila bounced on the balls of her feet, fingers drumming against her thighs. Relia was pacing, muttering under her breath, while Aurelia sat perfectly still, her hands clasped, her brown ponytail swaying as she watched.
Amaya
her voice cutting through the noise, sharp and precise They're going to hit the line on the left. Relia, you're late on the block. Read their setter's eyes.
Relia
whirling around, frustration boiling over I know! I know, I know! It's just—their middle is so fast, I can't—
Aurelia
quietly, from her seat You can. You did it in the last set.
Leila
growling, cracking her knuckles We win this point, we're in. That's it. That's everything we've worked for.
The referee's whistle shrilled. The opposing team's server stepped to the line, a tall, grinning titan of a woman with arms like pistons. She tossed the ball high—
And you moved.
From your position on the back line, you shifted. A predator's instinct. You were the last line of defense, the one they called The Phantom, The Wall of Akane, the Libero who never missed. Your black compression jersey clung to you, the number 15 stark against your chest. Your hair—hidden in its signature tight bun beneath the onyx-colored mask that covered your entire face, leaving only your eyes visible—was perfectly in place. The mask, sleek and matte, was as much a part of your identity as your name.
The serve screamed across the net. A jump float, dipping and swerving, nasty and deceptive.
You read it in a heartbeat. Three quick steps, a subtle shift of your hips, and you were there. Your forearms absorbed the impact with a clean, hollow thump. The ball popped up, perfectly controlled, arcing toward Amaya at the net.
Amaya
her voice a sharp command Mine!
She set it. A perfect, high, arching set to the left side. Leila was already in the air, her blonde curls whipping behind her, arm cocked like a hammer.
The opposing blockers jumped, a wall of red and white.
Leila swung.
The ball exploded off her palm, a rocket that screamed past the frantic block and slammed into the hardwood floor on the back line. The line judge's flag shot up. In.
The arena erupted.
A horn blared. Red lights flashed on the edge of the court. Whistles piercing. The announcer's voice, crackling with excitement, boomed through the speakers: "AND THAT'S THE MATCH! AKANE COLLEGE TAKES THE STATE CHAMPIONSHIP AND QUALIFIES FOR THE OLYMPIC QUALIFIER TOURNAMENT!"
The bench cleared in a second. Your teammates swarmed you, shrieking, crying, laughing, a tangle of limbs and sweat and joy. Amaya wrapped her arms around you, pressing her forehead against the hard shell of your mask.
Amaya
her voice breaking, thick with emotion We did it. Captain. We did it.
Relia
wailing, practically climbing onto your back OH MY GOD! OH MY GOD! WE'RE GOING TO THE OLYMPICS! I'M GONNA PEE! I'M GONNA—
Aurelia
a rare, wide smile breaking across her face, hugging Leila We're going. We're actually going.
Leila
grinning, punching your shoulder affectionately The best Libero in the world. Never doubted you for a second, Phantom.
The crowd was on its feet, a sea of gold and black. Banners waved. Someone was setting off confetti cannons. The noise was a physical force, pressing in from all sides.
But through the roar, you caught another sound. A lower, more guttural chant. Not from the Akane section.
From the front row, near the player's tunnel.
Three male voices, rising above the din, chanting in unison.
Yuji
loud, playful, unmistakably cocky Y/N! Y/N! Y/N!
Ran
deeper, muffled, but just as enthusiastic Show us your face! We love you!
Yuki
calmer, but with an edge of devotion The Phantom of Akane! Take the mask off for the world!
The men's national volleyball team. The three athletes who dominated the sport on the male side. Yuji Nishida, Ran Takahashi, and Yuki Ishikawa. All three in the front row, all three in Akane College jerseys, all three with their eyes locked solely on you. Their voices cut through the celebration, drawing the attention of cameras and fans alike.
Your teammates froze. Relia's eyes went wide.
Relia
whispering, awed Captain... the big three are watching you.
