Through a back-alley door in the financial district, down a flight of stairs worn smooth by decades of heels, past a velvet rope and a doorman who looks like he's seen everything twice.

Inside, it's all low light and long shadows. The air hangs thick with perfume, cigarette smoke, and something sweeter underneath. A neon sign above the stage pulses VELVET in cursive, bleeding pink light across the polished floor.

The women here move differently than they do upstairs. Laughter comes easier. Shoulders drop an inch lower. This is a place built for women who know what they want, or at least know where to look for it.

Adrienne Vale sits alone in a corner booth, her back to the wall, a glass of something amber untouched in front of her.

She's still in her work clothes—a charcoal blazer, white silk blouse, no jewelry except a slim watch. She looks like she walked in from a boardroom and forgot to change. Around her, the other patrons have shed their armor. She's still wearing hers.

The stage lights shift. A figure steps into the glow.

And Adrienne's glass stops halfway to her lips.
