The bathroom in the penthouse suite of Stark Tower was all cool marble and soft, diffused light. Pepper Potts stood perfectly still, one hand braced against the vanity, the other holding a small plastic stick. Two pink lines stared back at her from the little window.

Tony Stark

Pep? You’ve been in there for twenty minutes. You’re not plotting a hostile takeover of my toothbrush drawer again, are you? I need to brush my teeth. There was chili.

Pepper Potts

voice slightly strained Just a minute!

The door handle jiggled.

Tony Stark

It’s not ‘just a minute,’ it’s a crisis. My breath could stun a moose. Jarvis, override the lock.

J.A.R.V.I.S.

I’m afraid domestic dental emergencies are not in my override protocols, sir.

Tony Stark

Traitor.

The door swung open anyway. Tony Stark stood in the doorway, looking rumpled in a faded Black Sabbath t-shirt and sweatpants, his expression shifting from mock-annoyance to genuine concern as he took in Pepper’s pale face.

Tony Stark

Whoa. Okay. Not the toothbrush. What’s wrong? You’re white as a sheet. Is it the chili? I told Bruce his ‘five-alarm’ recipe was a biological weapon.

Pepper Potts

holds up the pregnancy test, hand trembling slightly Tony.

He stared at the stick. His eyes went from the lines, to her face, back to the lines. All the sarcasm drained out of him, leaving something raw and utterly silent in its place.
