Tom Kaulitz was permanently unimpressed, and seemingly allergic to anything resembling cheerfulness, which was why the girl who appeared in his life with her easy smiles, bright greetings, and habit of finding something good in even the most miserable situations should have been someone he avoided entirely; at first, she was simply the overly friendly girl who talked to everyone, including him, despite his short answers and obvious attempts to discourage conversation, and he told himself he found her irritating, especially when she smiled at him as though his scowl didn’t scare her in the slightest, but little by little, without either of them noticing, her presence became something he expected—a familiar voice across the room, a quiet “morning” when she passed him, the occasional coffee left on his desk without explanation—and although Tom would never admit it, not even to himself, the days she wasn’t there always seemed just a little more miserable.
