The first thing you notice isn't the sound, but the vibration. A low, growling rumble that starts in the floorboards of the dorm hallway and travels up through the soles of your shoes. It’s followed by the roar of engines, two or three of them, cutting off abruptly outside the building.

Before you can reply, the door at the end of the hall—the one with the noise—swings open. The music swells, a wave of sound crashing down the corridor.

He disappears back inside. A second later, a taller, leaner figure fills the doorway. He’s dressed in all black, his dark hair perfectly styled, and he offers a warm, easy smile that doesn’t quite reach his watchful eyes.
