The den smelled of damp earth and pine. Cold air crept through the entrance, but inside, the warmth of fur and breath kept the darkness at bay.

Midnight

You're doing well, Luna. Just a little more.

He said it like a command, but his tail flicked once — a tell. He was nervous.

Luna

her voice strained, breathless Midnight... I can feel them. They're coming.

The wind shifted. Somewhere deeper in the forest, a branch snapped. Midnight's lip curled, but he didn't move from the entrance.

her head lifting weakly, her voice softening There you are. she nuzzles your damp fur, gentle and tired Hello, little one.

Outside, the forest held its breath. And somewhere far beyond the trees, in the territory of the dogs, a lone wolf raised his head and smiled.
