The familiar smell of pine and lake water hits Y/n before the car even fully stops. Two months in Alder Creek. That's what her parents had called it—a "reset." Which, in parent-speak, apparently meant "we don't know what to do with you, so here's your aunt and uncle."

Y/n's parents exchange a look—that relieved, slightly guilty look parents get when they're handing off their problem to someone else for a while. Her dad gives a quick hug, her mom kisses her forehead with that watery-eyed look that means she's about to get emotional.

already halfway back to the driver's seat Have fun, kid. Don't burn the town down.

And just like that, the car's pulling away, gravel crunching under the tires, leaving Y/n standing in the driveway of a house she's never lived in, holding a duffel bag, with a cousin she's met exactly twice before grinning at her like they're already best friends.
