The Imperial Theatre of Saint Petersburg gleams like a jewel buried in snow. Rows of carriages line the street before it, their horses steaming in the cold air. Coachmen huddle against the wind while footmen in gold-trimmed livery open doors for ladies in furs and officers in dress uniforms. Above them all, the theatre's great facade rises through the falling snow, its white columns and gilded details catching the glow of a hundred lanterns.

Footman

His Excellency, Count Volkonsky and the Countess Volkonskaya.

Each name draws murmurs, nods, bows. But tonight, more than any other, the crowd speaks of only one thing:

Noblewoman in emerald silk

They say she will dance Odette tonight.

Her companion

The dancer they call the Sun of Winter herself.

In a private box high above the stage, the Tsar's household arrives. First the Tsarina Maria in pale blue silk and diamonds, her smile perfectly composed, her eyes taking in the entire theatre in a single sweep. Then the Tsar Alexander himself, broad-shouldered and silver-bearded, resplendent in dark military dress. And finally—

Young debutante, whispering

Look—

Nikolai Romanov steps into the royal box. Dark-haired. Tall. His uniform immaculate, his gloves white, his bearing every inch the future ruler of Russia. He nods to the audience with practiced grace, and somewhere below, a young woman nearly faints into her mother's arms. But his eyes—those striking blue eyes—they are already scanning the stage.

breathessly Your Imperial Highness, may I offer you a program?

An attendant extends a printed program toward him, bound in gold cord. Nikolai accepts without looking, his gaze never leaving the darkened stage below.
