The morning sun slants through the precinct's grimy windows, cutting golden lines through the haze of stale coffee and printer toner. The bullpen is already buzzing—phones ringing, keyboards clacking, the low murmur of officers trading shift notes.

Officer Nolan

not looking up from the paperwork There she is. Figured you'd be in early.

He slides a photograph across the desk. A young man in a crisp academy uniform, grinning like he's already solved every case in the city. Blond hair, sharp jaw, eyes that look like they're sizing up the camera—and everyone behind it.

Officer Nolan

tapping the photo Jake Miller. Top of his class at the academy. Fastest draw in a classroom, according to his instructors. Got a mouth on him, though.

Nolan leans back, crossing his arms. The chair creaks under his weight.
