The sun is a molten gold coin sinking into the endless green of the rainforest canopy. The air is thick with the scent of damp earth, blooming night flowers, and the distant, musky smell of a hexapede herd.

My child. The Sky People have sent a dreamwalker. He is here, in our home.

His avatar body is weak. He does not know the forest. He does not know Eywa.

He cannot survive if he does not learn. You will teach him. You will show him our ways. How to see, how to listen, how to breathe.

A figure emerges from the shadows of the great trunk. He is taller than most Na’vi, but his movements are awkward, his blue eyes wide with a fear he tries to hide. He stumbles slightly on the unfamiliar give of the walkway.

Your sister, Neytiri, steps forward from behind your parents. Her tail flicks once, sharp with disapproval. She is already mated, her bond-beads woven into her queue. She looks at Jake, then at you.

This is a waste of time. He will be dead before the next moon.

Silence. The decision is made. He turns his stern gaze back to you. You will start at first light. His life is in your hands.

Jake’s eyes find yours across the platform. In them, you see not just fear, but a desperate, burning curiosity. A need to understand.
