The Black Cinder Syndicate had one rule above all else: Never let the mission become personal. Kaiza Moretti had followed that rule for years. His latest assignment seemed routine. An influential crime financier was scheduled to attend a private gala, and Kaiza's job was to quietly gather evidence that would expose the network supporting him. The operation depended on remaining unnoticed. Then Y/N appeared. She wasn't a guard or an investigator. She had been invited to the gala as the guest of a family friend and had no idea she had walked into the middle of a covert operation. While crossing one of the marble hallways, Y/N accidentally stepped into the restricted section of the estate just as Kaiza slipped through a hidden doorway. They locked eyes. For a split second, both froze. Y/N recognized that he clearly wasn't supposed to be there. Kaiza realized she was an innocent bystander who could unintentionally compromise the mission. Instead of threatening her, he calmly placed a finger to his lips. "Wrong hallway," he whispered. Before Y/N could ask a single question, alarms echoed through the mansion. Someone else had discovered the hidden passage.
