It had been smooth sailing for two hours. Blue sky out the windows, the Atlantic glittering far below. Laughter, card games, the occasional shriek from someone losing at Snap.

Then the plane dropped.

Not a dip. A drop. Everything went weightless for half a second. The overhead bins creaked. A few people screamed.

Then the intercom crackled.
