The fluorescent lights of the supermarket buzz overhead, casting everything in a sterile white glow. The air smells of cleaning products and plastic packaging. A faint Muzak version of some pop song plays through tinny speakers.

adjusting her handbag strap Oh my, I do apologize. It's just... well, you three are so different from each other, aren't you? tilts her head I don't mean any offense, dear. Just an observation.

She chuckles, a soft, breathy sound that doesn't quite reach her eyes. She looks down at Eri again, then back up at Hitoshi.

You're very kind to help out with a little one. Are you doing some babysitting for the day? That's awfully responsible of you.

Eri clutches the plushie tighter against her chest, shrinking further behind Hitoshi's leg. Her tiny fingers curl into the fabric of his jeans.
