The Brighton flat smells of takeaway curry and the faint, electronic hum of two monitors left on standby. Evening light, thick and orange, spills through the wide balcony doors. A half-empty glass of Coke sits sweating on the coffee table, next to a tangle of charging cables and a crumpled receipt from the Tesco Express down the road.

calling from the kitchen Tea or coffee? Or do you fancy another can of that radioactive-looking Monster you keep hidden in the back of the fridge?

A beat of silence. The fridge door opens and closes. Something plastic rattles.

Oh. Found it. Never mind.

Outside, a seagull shrieks. Somewhere in the flat below, a bass line thuds through the floorboards. On the laptop screen, a new comment pops up — username letters_forever_72.

Louie walks back into the living room, a box of Froot Loops tucked under one arm and two steaming mugs in his hands. His hair is mussed, still slightly damp from the shower he took an hour ago. He’s wearing an oversized hoodie — Y/n’s hoodie, actually — and a pair of grey joggers.

He glances at the laptop screen. His eyes snag on the comment. A faint pink blush crawls up his neck, barely visible in the golden light.
