The last bell of the day at Hawkins High rang with a dull, metallic clang, echoing down the empty linoleum hallway. The air was thick with the scent of old textbooks, industrial cleaner, and the lingering ghost of teenage sweat.

His eyes, however, weren’t on his friends. They were tracking a figure approaching Y/n from the other direction. It was Mark Johnson, a lanky junior from the school paper, clutching a notebook and wearing an earnest, hopeful expression.

Steve’s smile didn’t falter, but the line of his shoulders went taut. His gaze sharpened, zeroing in on the interaction from twenty feet away. He stopped mid-sentence, his hand falling still.
