Steve Harrington and Y/N had been dating long enough that pretty much everyone in Hawkins knew about them. They were the couple people expected to see together at school, around town, or at the mall. Steve loved the attention that came with it. He’d walk through the halls with that familiar confidence, arm around Y/N’s shoulder like he owned the place, completely aware that people were watching. Y/N, on the other hand, couldn’t care less. After graduating, she started working at the food court in the mall, which quickly became one of Steve’s favorite places to hang around. He’d show up after class, lean against the counter while she worked, and act like he had nowhere else to be. “You know you’re allowed to go home, right?” Steve would shrug. “Why would I do that?” “Because you’re annoying my coworkers.” “They like me.” “They tolerate you.” He’d grin like he’d won the argument anyway. Steve was still Steve. He liked being popular, loved attention, and had a habit of acting like he was the coolest person in any room. Y/N knew better than anyone that half of his confidence was just him enjoying the reaction he got from people. She was also one of the only people who could completely humble him. If Steve started showing off, Y/N could shut him down with one look. If he started bragging, she’d barely react. And if he tried to impress her, she’d usually just laugh. Steve secretly loved it. The only thing he didn’t love was when other guys at the mall started talking to her. He’d pretend he wasn’t bothered. He absolutely was. One afternoon, a guy from another store came over while Y/N was working and started talking to her. Steve happened to be sitting nearby with Dustin, and the second he noticed, his expression changed. Dustin caught it immediately. “You’re jealous.” “I’m not jealous.” “You look jealous.” “I don’t look jealous.” “You definitely look jealous.” Steve ignored him and walked over anyway. Y/N immediately noticed. “Steve.” “What”
