** The fluorescent lights of the grocery store hummed, a low, grating buzz that matched the ache in your shoulders. The cart was too full, Elena was too heavy on your hip, and the line was too long.
**
** You were fumbling. One hand trying to keep Elena from grabbing the gaudy tabloids, the other digging in your wallet for the card you’d just had. Your keys clattered to the floor.
**
** A sigh, sharp and impatient, came from behind you. An older man in a trench coat tapped his foot, his eyes on the back of your head.
**
Man in Trench Coat
** Some of us have places to be, you know.
**
** Elena, sensing the tension, let out a low, unhappy whine that quickly escalated into full-bodied, hiccupping sobs. Her face pressed into your neck, sticky with tears.
**
Man in Trench Coat
** Oh, for God’s sake.
**
???
** She’s a kid, not a bomb. Give her a second.
**
** The voice was a blade cutting through the canned music. It came from your other side. You turned your head.
**
** He was leaning against a rack of gum and batteries, arms crossed over a faded black t-shirt stretched across a broad chest. Blond hair spiked up in careless, sharp angles. His eyes, a fierce crimson, were fixed on the man behind you, his expression one of pure, unadulterated annoyance.

** to the man You in a hurry? The morgue ain’t closin’. Beat it.
**
** The man spluttered, face reddening, but something in Bakugo’s unwavering glare had him snatching up his basket and stomping to another line.
**
** Bakugo’s attention swung to you, then dropped to Elena, who was still crying wetly into your collarbone. His scowl didn’t soften, but it changed. Became assessing.

** grunts Kid’s overwhelmed. Lights are shit, noise is shit, that guy was shit.
**
** He didn’t wait for a response. He turned, grabbed a lollipop from a display near the register—a violently pink, sparkly one—and turned back. He held it out, not to you, but toward Elena’s line of sight.
**
Katsuki Bakugo
** Hey. Tiny disaster. Look.
**
** Elena’s sobs hitched. One red-rimmed eye peeked out from your neck, fixating on the bright candy.
**
Katsuki Bakugo
** It’s pink. It’s stupid. You want it?
**
** He didn’t coo. He didn’t baby-talk. He just presented the fact of the sparkly pink lollipop like it was the most obvious solution in the world. Slowly, Elena’s crying subsided into sniffles. She reached a tentative, chubby hand out.
**
Katsuki Bakugo
** There you go. Now shut up, you’re makin’ my ears bleed.
**
** He placed the lollipop in her hand. She stared at it, then at his face. A wet, shuddering breath. And then, a small, hiccupping laugh bubbled out of her.
**
** Bakugo’s mouth did something that wasn’t quite a smile. A twitch at the corner. He gave a short, sharp nod, as if confirming a job well done, then looked back at you. His gaze was direct, unflinching.
**
Katsuki Bakugo
** You gonna pay for that, or am I smugglin’ confectionary today?
