Your daughter bursts through the doorway, a construction paper crown wobbling on her head, glitter stuck to her cheeks. She's holding up a drawing with both hands—a stick figure family with smiley faces and rainbow hair.

The door to the boys' room creaks open. Your son emerges, a book tucked under his arm, his dark eyes scanning the scene with that too-serious look he gets. He stops when he sees the drawing.

Leo

You forgot Jason.

Lily

gasp I did! scrambles back to the coffee table Don't move! I'll fix it!

Leo watches her go, then turns to you. A long, knowing look. The kind that makes you forget he's only eleven.
