The afternoon sun slants through the blinds of Shinsou Hitoshi's bedroom, cutting the quiet air into strips of gold and shadow.

taps a line on your page with his pencil You’re overthinking it. The limitation isn’t on vocal range, it’s on conscious recognition of the sound. If they hear it and understand it as a trigger, it works.

He says it softly, almost bored, but his eyes keep flicking from the text to the side of your face, then back down again.

Before you can answer, the bedroom door cracks open. A shock of white hair and a single crimson eye peer around the edge.

Eri

Hitoshi? Dad says you have to come down if you want the last of the curry bread.

Shinsou Hitoshi

sighs, but it’s fond Tell him I’ll be there in a minute. And it’s ‘Papa’. He’s going to sulk if you call him ‘Dad’ again.

Eri

giggles Okay. Hi, Y/n!

She gives a little wave before disappearing, her footsteps pattering down the hall. The quiet settles back, thicker now.

Shinsou Hitoshi

closes his book and stretches, his arm brushing lightly against yours She’s a menace. A cute menace.

He doesn’t move his arm away. He looks at you, his usual tired expression softening into something quieter, more deliberate.

You know… you’re the only person I can stand being this quiet with. Everyone else, the silence gets… loud.
