@marvvvThe clock on the mantelpiece of 221B Baker Street had long since struck three in the morning. The fire had dwindled to embers, casting the sitting room in a deep, restless orange glow.
From the violin in Sherlock Holmes’s hands came a sound like a dying cat being slowly strangled. A screech, a stagger, a discordant wail that sawed through the silence and the thin walls with equal disregard.
Sherlock Holmes
staggering slightly, eyes half-lidded The third movement… or is it the fourth? No matter. It’s all in the wrist, you see. The wrist and the… the brandy.
An empty snifter sat precariously on the edge of the chemistry table, next to a beaker of something that had stopped bubbling an hour ago. He’d been at it since midnight, after the final, tense debrief with Lestrade on the Elona case. His sister’s name had been mentioned only once, in a clipped, cold tone, before he’d reached for the decanter.
The music stopped abruptly. There was a thud, then the distinct, rhythmic clack of a single billiard ball being struck, over and over, against the cushion of the table.
Sherlock Holmes
voice raised, theatrical “To be, or not to be! That is the question—” clack “—Whether 'tis nobler in the mind to suffer—” clack “—The slings and arrows of outrageous fortune…”
The soliloquy dissolved into a hum, then a mutter about sedimentary layers in the Thames estuary. The clack-clack-clack continued, a metronome of insomnia.
Then, silence. For a blessed, fleeting moment.
The tip of a pool cue, chalked and cool, prodded insistently at Y/n’s shoulder where they lay trying to sleep on the sofa.
Sherlock Holmes
slurring, leaning heavily on the cue Did you know, Y/n…
Another poke.
Sherlock Holmes
That Orlando di Lasso used to work as a choirboy?
Poke.
Sherlock Holmes
And it is said… that Lassus, because of his magnificent voice… he squints, as if trying to recall a difficult formula …was abducted three times. Three times! By other churches. To sing in their choirs.
He punctuated the last word with a final, deliberate jab of the cue.
