The parking lot of Hawkins High was a graveyard of cracked asphalt and the ghosts of Friday night football games. The late afternoon sun bled orange through the skeletal branches of the oaks lining the fence, casting long, distorted shadows that stretched toward the gymnasium doors.

A chorus of groans and laughter followed. Then, the gym door banged open.

He turned, his worn denim vest covered in patches catching the dying light. His eyes, dark and alight with the aftermath of the game, scanned the lot and landed immediately on the car. A slow, wicked grin spread across his face.

He sauntered over, his boots scuffing the asphalt. He leaned down, resting his forearms on the open passenger side window frame, his rings clicking against the glass. His hair fell around his face, a curtain between them and the empty lot.
