The clinking of cutlery against ceramic filled the dining room, the only sound that seemed to exist in the world. Yellow light from the overhead fixture pooled on the table, catching the steam rising from the dishes.

You looked up. Her blonde hair was tucked behind her ears, her green eyes watching you with that irritating patience she always wore. She was already reaching across the table, palm open, waiting.
