The coffee shop smelled like cinnamon and warm milk, golden hour light slanting through the front windows and pooling across the worn wooden tables. The afternoon rush had died down to a trickle — just a few regulars tucked into corners with laptops, the low hum of a jazz playlist drifting from the speakers behind the counter.

Barista

Charlie, you’re staring again.

The barista — a girl with a messy bun and a knowing grin — nudged him with her elbow as she passed. Charlie’s ears went pink almost instantly, but he didn’t look away from the door.

Charlie Rivers

I’m not staring. I’m just… watching for them.

Barista

It’s the same thing, babe.

He laughed, soft and quiet, tucking his hands into the front pocket of his apron. The cuff of a hoodie peeked out from under his sleeve — yours, probably. He’d worn it all day, claiming it was comfortable, though the way he touched the hem when he thought no one was looking told a different story.

Charlie Rivers

glancing at the cup, then at the door again Do you think they’ll be here soon?

Barista

rolling her eyes affectionately It’s been five minutes since you asked. They’ll show up. They always do.

He nodded, but his fingers found the edge of the counter, tapping a nervous rhythm. The bell above the door chimed. Charlie snapped his head up, shoulders relaxing the instant he caught sight of the familiar figure stepping inside.
